The Hawks will use their added depth to give them an edge over Norfolk State.
The Saint Joseph's baseball team will be taking on Norfolk State this weekend for a three-game-series.
This series will be used as preparation for when the Hawks take on nationally ranked Elon.
Coach Pender commented that this series, "Will not be a good indicator for the outcome of the season because the conditions will be cold, and it will be the first time that we are outside. We are playing one week earlier this season to get us some work in before we face Elon."
The Hawks have an optimistic outlook for the season because there is a nice mixture of focused upperclassmen and a mature group of freshmen.
This is the largest recruiting class that Saint Joseph's baseball team has seen in a long time.
"I brought up a lot of players this time because this is really my first recruiting class," said Pender. "In the past two years I have taken on the recruiting classes of the previous coach. These recruits are more baseball mature, and were recruited with more of a purpose."
This weekend's game will give the team a chance to get in some work. Coach Pender is really looking to get the freshmen pitchers a lot of innings this weekend as well.
He will be looking to Randy Mower, Pat Monaghan, Adam Rivera, and Mark Dolaghan to see some time on the mound this weekend.
"They have the talent. It's just about them finding themselves on the mound," states Pender of his freshman pitchers.
Along with these pitchers, Coach Pender will be looking to his veterans to solidify the pitching rotation. Junior Mark Imbo, named MVP last season, has had a great fall, as well as sophomore Christ Prescott.
Prescott was a reliever last season, but will more than likely be the number one pitcher.
Unfortunately, some key injuries may hinder the Hawks' performance, junior Jason Hessler and senior Jeff Williams were both injured playing summer ball.
