To the Editor:

I have an issue I would like to bring to the attention of the student body. It affects all of them, whether they are aware of it or not. We, the current students on this campus, are being shortchanged by the administration and the campus budgets. There are already too few spots on the campus that students can and actually will use. But the crime is that the one greatest asset to creating a community here is in such disrepair and suffers from an acute lack of funding. What I am speaking about specifically is the Hawk Rock in Campion Center. I have been an employee there for the last year and a half, and for my freshman year, I nearly lived there. But I digress.

The Hawk Rock has, over the last two years, been promised an upgrade and expansion to better appeal to the students and to create a warmer and more usable environment for the current student to enjoy. The current Hawk Rock, although a wonderful asset to the school, has been apparently left out of the greater plans for renovations time and time again. What I would like to know in the future is, if you do not take care of you current students, how do you pay to keep Maguire Campus up?

The Hawk Rock could become one of the cornerstones of campus life. It is indeed seeing more use as of late, thanks to some dedicated employees and some passionate patrons. But the Hawk Rock needs a veritable laundry list of upgrades. To be underutilizing such a vibrant and fun (yes, fun) space is against many of the things the Jesuit tradition stands for. We need a home on campus for the students' social lives, for ideas and passions to take shape, not just where students can sleep.

I would just like to pose a question to my fellow students and make one request: What can we do to make the Hawk Rock our home, not just a free drink? And ask your faculty, your administration, and your senators what they can do to make it that.
