As spring inches near, anticipation mounts for the end of the second semester, leaving only one thing on students minds: summer.
Students eagerly await that last week in May when they have completed exams, and the excitement for the warm weather and the carefree atmosphere of a break away from school lies ahead.
However, this excitement for the Saint Joseph's Summer Scholars is for an entirely different reason. For students accepted into the competitive Summer Scholars program, excitement lies in anticipating their continued summer stay on campus.
Students look forward to a summer filled with research and furthered education through the creative and engaging research they are to conduct during the summer months. The Summer Scholars program literally brings students face to face with opportunity. The programs administrator, Michael P. McCann, Ph.D., professor of Biology, compares the program to similar graduate school programs for a Ph.D.
According to McCann, last summer, the program accepted 73 students into its academic program, with funding reaching nearly a quarter of a million dollars.
The program's funding dates back to 1994, when the biology department received a grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Research Institute.
In 2005, the University administration committed additional funding, which supports the current 70 plus students. They receive a stipend of $3,000 and the possibility of free on-campus housing while they research from late May through early August.
The significant support given to the scholars provides them with the means to work their scholarly project as well as a significant period of time, over the summer months, allowing their complete devotion to the project. Summer scholarly work takes place alongside a Saint Joseph's University faculty mentor. Impressed and with great appreciation, McCann shows his gratitude to all faculty mentors since they all volunteer their time and efforts to the program.
