The Saint Joseph's Women's Indoor Track team is in the midst of a very successful campaign, due in large part to the efforts of two senior leaders, Valerie Ramirez and Rebecca Powell.
St. Joes' victory at the Collegeville Classic at Ursinus last week showed this more than ever, as the efforts of Ramirez and Powell keyed the Hawk's triumph.
Ramirez contributed a fifth place finish in the 200 meter dash, as well as taking home the second spot in the 55 meter hurdles, bettering her own school record in the process.
Powell also added to the Hawk point total, notching a win in the 800 meter run, and was a part of the "B" 4 x 400 relay team, which finished fifth.
While these two are usually hard at work, they found a moment to sit down and let loose for a little question and answer.
Sometimes in the midst of all the workouts and meets, one forgets to laugh and enjoy actually what he or she is doing.
Q: What is the weirdest moment you have ever been a part of in track?
V.R.: Track isn't really a weird sport. Sometimes in high school, people would miss events or things like that, but that's about it.
R.P: It didn't happen on the track, but last year, going to the University of Virginia, our bus broke down.
We were waiting on the side of the road for three hours for a new bus.
In total, we spent about 12 hours on the road that day.
Q: Well, that is no fun. Anyone on the team that has any bizarre pre-meet rituals or superstitions?
V.R.: Everyone has their own little things, but nothing that is too crazy. One of our freshmen changes her socks before every race, but that's about it.
Q: Well, I would hope they are clean socks.
R.P.: Some of the girls must have their Livestrong bracelets on or they freak out.
Some people have different music they have to listen to.
A few are really weird about their eating schedules, so they have to wake up at 6 a.m. so they can eat before a meet.
