This season the Hawks played in the NABC Tournament in Louisville, Kentucky. Louisville is a fine city. But who are we kidding? Louisville is not Maui. One piece of advice for Phil Martelli- don't forget the sunscreen.
Coach Phil Martelli and the men's basketball team are invited to the 2008 EA Sports Maui Invitational hosted by Chaminade.
From November 24 to 26, the Hawks will be showcasing their talents in front of a national audience against such powerhouses as North Carolina, Texas, Notre Dame, Indiana, Oregon, Alabama and Division II Chaminade.
Oregon and Alabama will join the Hawks in 2008 as Maui first timers. The Hawks will help bring in the 25th anniversary of the Maui Invitational in 2008.
Next year's tournament will feature such teams like Duke, Illinois, Marquette, Princeton, and last year's final four surprise, LSU.
ESPN, which will carry a minimum of nine tournament games in 2007, will also carry games in 2008.
The coverage provided by ESPN will give coach Martelli yet another marketing tool for his recruiters. The promise of national television exposure will no doubt help bring in highly talented high school players.
With the renovation of the Fieldhouse and the new found TV exposure, perhaps Martelli can bring in a highly touted high school player or players who would otherwise not picture themselves in the crimson and gray uniform.
Since its creation, the Maui Invitational hosted 79 schools covering 20 conferences. As one of the NCAA's most popular season opening tournaments, Maui has the rare ability to host nationally ranked teams in the intimate Lahaina Civic Center. The games are routinely close and the crowds are always loud.
The Hawks will fit right in.
An invitation to a tournament of this caliber is a great achievement for coach Martelli, the Hawks community and even the Atlantic 10 conference.
To be put in the same category by tournament operator KemperSports Marketing and Communications, as former National Champions North Carolina and Indiana is a testament to the growth of the Hawks basketball program.
