Last Friday, the Hawks' Men's indoor track team continued to fly through its season with a solid fifth-place finish out of 12 teams at the Ursinus Invitational.

Thanks to a superb effort from its young athletes, St. Joe's totaled 54 points for the meet. Cheyney University dominated the competition, scoring 138 points. The next closest finisher was Kutztown with 77 points.

A freshman gave the Crimson and Gray a presence in the sprints, while two sophomores helped lead the Hawks in the longer distance races.

Sprinter Drew Brandt, '10, showed off his fast wings by finishing fifth in the 200 meters and third in the 400 meters, with respective times of 23.22 seconds and 51.97 seconds.

On the sophomore side, Stephen Young was one of the two star-performers by zooming into first place in the 1000-meter race with a time of 2:38.25.

Young then came back with a solid sixth-place finish in the 800-meter race by finishing in 2:02.15. Talented long-distance runner Brendan Kearney was the second of the two sophomore stars, as he finished first overall in the mile race with a time of 4:23.12.

And while they did not show up in the final results, two other Hawks were winners in each of the other two mile-heats.

"The young guys really stepped up," said Brian O'Neill, '07, who ran 4:41.08 in the mile and 2:05.7 in the 800 at Ursinus.

"Their performances really allowed us to feel good about this meet as a team."

Brandt's, Young's, and Kearney's performances epitomize how the younger runners' training is finally beginning to pay off, according to O'Neill.

"Their training is really starting to kick in. Some of these guys didn't race at Penn State last week, so we were glad to see them run in a meet where everybody gets the opportunity to run."

The team's veteran athletes also had the opportunity to flap their wings. Their presence proved to be vital in backing up the younger runners' stellar performances.
