Within the first three minutes of Sunday's game, you had the feeling it was going to be Jawan Carter's day.

Point guard Jawan Carter, '10, hit the Hawks' first two three-pointers of the game pacing his team to an 82-74 victory over the consensus A-10 favorite, Xavier.

With this impressive win, the Hawks improved to 4-2 in the Atlantic 10, snapping their two- game losing streak in the conference. Carter finished the game with a career high 20 points on 6 of 9 shooting, including 4 of 6 from three.

The freshman Carter simply outplayed his counterpart, highly regarded point guard Drew Lavender.

Carter harassed Lavender, holding him to seven points on only 2 of 7 shooting.

In front of a sold-out crowd at the Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse, Carter's balance of poise and confidence lifted the Hawks to the eight-point win.

When the buzzer sounded, Carter simply raised his hands and walked to his teammates, who were waiting to congratulate him. After the game, Coach Phil Martelli sang his praises.

In post game press conference, Martelli made it clear that Carter stepped up his level of performance against Xavier. According to Martelli, it was Carter's long range shooting that enabled teammates, especially honored Big Five Player of the Week sophomore Ahmad Nivins, to work the paint.

Carter showed confidence and a sense of eagerness in his playing, two qualities that significantly helped the Hawks fly past the Musketeers.

This season, as the starting point guard for the Hawks, Carter is leading all freshmen on the team, averaging 7.7 points a game.

As this young team continues to get acquainted with each other on the basketball floor, look for that number to steadily improve.

If Carter can consistently hit the open three, it will force defenses to think twice before they double down on Rob Ferguson and Nivins.

This will no doubt improve the play of the big men and the entire team.
