No longer able to get away with just a sweatshirt, black North Face jackets become rampant throughout campus.
Coming out of Mandeville, the cold metal piece of her cell phone doesn't stop junior Amy Wold from talking basketball.
Wold gives a quick play-by-play for her friend as she scuffs pass Finnesey field in her red sweatshirt, jacket, and Uggs, basketball is always on the mind.
"She was driving to the whole, but I slid into her lane and got the rebound," says Wold on her way to main campus.
Basketball is always on the mind, but when you have four games a week, two to three hour practices including lifting, and too many ice packs later, it is understandable.
The Saint Joseph's University's women's basketball team is heading into a crucial time in their schedule. Currently, the Hawks are 10-8, and 3-2 in the Atlantic 10 conference. A record that has not come easily with many victories and defeats determined by free throw shots.
"Richmond was a lesson learned," said Head Coach Cindy Griffin. "We are still growing and still learning, but our bench is giving us quality points."
Big home games are lurking. Saint Joseph's will face Penn for the 32nd time tonight at 7 pm on home court. Sunday afternoon, the Hawks will host Temple in attempt to redeem their first loss, 59-53.
Fans enjoy the thrill of Big 5 games because the players bring with them to the court pride in their jersey and skill in their play.
Tonight, the Saint Joseph's play the Quakers for the 32nd time. The series favors the Hawks, 30-1.
The only time Saint Joseph's lost to Penn, 64-57, was on December 1, 2004 at Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse. At the Palestra, the St. Joe's is undefeated, 18-0.
Those are good stats for tonight's matchup. Even better stats come from the players and coaches themselves.
Senior guard Ayahna Cornish is finding her niche on the court. Injury free and only eight games left till her final Atlantic 10 championship, Cornish is in her fifth gear.
"Cornish takes the sucess of the team very personally," said Griffin. "She wants to leave a winning team."
Recently, Cornish posted her third double-double of the year away at Saint Louis. Cornish finished the night with a game-high 24 points and 12 rebounds to lift St. Joe's against the Rams, 70-68.
