With the freshman 15 looming over everyone's head and the country's obesity rates on a constant uphill climb, students are always looking for a new way to make fitness interesting. This is what Flip Fitness offers St. Joe's students: a unique workout program and a little healthy competition for motivation.

Beginning on Jan. 24, St. Joe's will be competing with Temple, Drexel, Villanova, LaSalle, and Philadelphia University for the title of "Philly's Fittest College". A hundred students from all six schools were tested this Saturday January 20th for their weight, body fat, and resting heart rate, the three measurements that are important to the competition. These three components are crucial to the competition because at the end of the four weeks, the school with the most improvement in these three areas will be the winner.

At the start of the competition, the students receive a Flip Fitness deck of playing cards, and on each card there is a different workout activity. The goal of every workout is to complete all 52 cards in 30 minutes. This creates a fast-paced intensive workout that can be done anywhere at any time. This particular program was also designed to require no equipment, making it easy for students with limited time and resources. In addition, this workout plan is designed to work for anyone, with three progressive levels of difficulty and the option to do which one works for you.

Also included in the competition, which had a $15 participation fee, is a weekly class with a round of the Flip card game guided by a Master Flip Instructor. This provides students with support from their fellow students as well as fitness advice and explanations from an expert. However, one of the best advantages of the Flip program is that you never do the same workout twice; it is fitness by the luck of the draw. This aspect makes for better results and appeals to many of the students. John Realyvasquez, '09, said, "It just seemed like a fun way to change my workout." The class at St. Joe's will take place on Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. but students are expected to work out on their own outside of the class. In addition, the Flip team is attempting to add a Sunday class for those students who are unavailable on Friday mornings.

The title of "Philly's Fittest College" is not just for bragging rights although those are nice. The competition also offers many prizes and opportunities for St. Joe's and its students, who will hold the title all year long if won. The title comes with many cash prizes and media coverage on NBC, which currently has the rights to the competition. The winning university will be featured on the cover of the Philly Fit Magazine and will be on stage at this year's Philly Fit bash. However, all of these prizes are not what are on the students' mind. When asked why he decided to register for the program, Realyvasquez said, " I like working out and I like going to classes to work out." For him, Flip Fitness was the perfect option.
