Men meet competition with success

The Saint Joseph's men's track team took off to a quick start of the indoor season with a strong showing at last weekend's Lafayette Invitational in Easton, Pennsylvania.

The meet, which pitted the Hawks against the host Leopards, Moravian College, and East Stroudsburg University, was not scored as a team competition.

Nonetheless, St. Joe's put in a number of stellar performances on Friday, led by a trio of runners in the 500-meter, and two strong relay teams.

The 500-meter run was the best event for the Hawks, in which they took 3rd, 5th, and 6th places.

Leading the way for St. Joe's was senior Joe Witiw, with a time of 1:07.87. Following close on his heels were fellow senior Mike Tatara (1:09.36) and sophomore Tom Gonzalez (1:16.64).

"Overall, we were pleased with the meet," says Witiw. "The most important thing in an early meet like this is to get out and compete, and that's exactly what we did. Not everything went right, and the times weren't great, but we didn't expect great times this weekend."

Adding to this solid foundation were several returning Hawks. Junior Matt Weaver placed 3rd in the 440 yard dash, with a time of 53.66.

Senior Chris Kessler contributed a 5th place finish in the 880 yard run at a time of 2:00.21, while senior Matt McClure threw the shot put 12.51 meters, good for 6th place in the event, the only field event in which a Hawk placed.

Rounding out the meet's top individual performers was a group of Hawk freshman appearing in their first meet at the collegiate level.

Drew Brandt took the top spot among Hawk runners in the 60 yard dash, finishing 5th in a time of 6.93. Steve Philbrook (56.15) and Chris Caranante (58.96) showed well in the 440, taking 6th and 8th places, respectively.

Brian Doherty also placed, completing the 880 yard run in 2:11.61, earning him 11th place.

The Hawks followed up their individual success with a sound performance in the 4 x 440 yard relay, where the "A" team of Brandt, Witiw, Weaver and Tatara finished 2nd with a time of 3:31.95.
