It is a clean slate.
It is the beginning.
The women's track team starts the indoor season tonight at the Lafayette Invitational.
St. Joe's will be competing against local universities including Rider, Muhlenberg, Moravian, East Stroudsburg, and host Lafayette.
Following a great past season for St. Joe's, the bar is set high this year.
Graduating senior captains Andria Smythe and Thuy Nguyen led the Hawks to setting seven new school marks during last year's indoor campaign as St. Joe's matched their best ever finish at the Atlantic 10 indoor championships.
Those on the team last year have witnessed what it takes to succeed and are poised to build upon those accomplishments.
"We have a solid group of seniors that can make my life much easier," said Head Coach Kevin Quinn. "They provide a leadership role and have the experience to be the best runners on the team."
Senior captains Julie Lentz, Suzanne McHenry, and Valerie Ramirez are the core group of runners that can make Coach Quinn's life easier.
Lentz broke through last year when she eclipsed her own school record in the 400 m sprint (57.11), which she set two weeks prior. Ramirez set school records in the 55 m hurdle (8.60), 60-meter hurdle (9.08), and the 4x200 m relay.
Similar to her other two senior captains, McHenry was outstanding, but specialized in middle distance running. McHenry was a standout in cross-country, finishing first in every regular season meet during the 2005 season.
That success translated to indoor track as she finished first in the 3000-meter race at Fordham (10:30.81) and sixth in the 5000 m race (17:35.63) at the A-10 Championships.
What do all these achievements mean for this season? In one word: experience.
The senior captains, along with the core group of seniors in Renee Spangler, Erin Kelly, Amanda Guthridge, and Rebecca Powell, know what it takes to win.
Tonight will prove to be part of the experimentation process to find out where each runner stands.
