Hawks welcome back Govens

Issue date: 12/1/06 Section: Sports
"Six to eight weeks," said the doctors.

With two screws surgically placed into Darrin Govens' right hand less than two weeks ago, the time span stated by the doctor seemed more then reasonable.

Govens never being injured before in his career, would not stand for that, he was not ready to be a spectator… at least not for long.

After sitting out two games versus Bucknell and Penn State, Govens approached the Coach, "I'm playing tomorrow Coach," he said to Coach Martelli before practice began on November 26th.

Govens would not be denied his ability to play any longer; he ran through practice that night with the practice squad and seemed ready to go for the game.

When Monday morning came around, Govens only had one thing on his mind, get cleared to play against Boston University.

Govens was able to leave the trainer office that morning with a smile on his face because he could play.

Several weeks ahead of schedule, Govens took precautions by wearing a pad over his right hand for protection and a small bandage there for safety.

Struggling throughout the first half The Hawks found themselves in a discerning position, with trouble on the offensive end they needed some to step up and hit a big shot.

With St. Joe's down by three with ten minutes left in the half Govens called his own number and pulled up for three, injured hand and all, and drained it.

Acting as a spark for the team Govens came down the floor, worked to get open, received the pass, and nailed the three without a second thought.

With confidence exuding from this freshman he ran the offensive efficiently and when his time came on the foul line toward the latter stages of the half he also converted there.

Govens was able to read the Boston University offense, cut into the passing lane and intercept the pass in the later parts of the fist half.

Off that steal St. Joe's would be able to get a bucket and more importantly get the seemingly quiet crowd back into the game.
