I would like to welcome everyone back to campus after what I hope was a great Thanksgiving break for you and your family. As I know is true on my part, I am sure that for many of you, the rest of your semester will consist of many projects, tests, finals, etc., that we have all been dreading and knowingly procrastinating on for some weeks now - I would like to offer my deepest sympathy and best of luck!
I would like to take the time to congratulate all of the candidates who ran for positions on the 7th University Student Senate. Whether you won or lost, you are all to be commended for taking the initiative to get involved with such a unique and highly influential student organization. I have absolutely no doubt that the leadership of the newly elected Executive Board will initiate, implement and experience much success for the student body in their upcoming term. I am also confident that the many accomplishments of the USS will carry well into 2007 and beyond. Again, I offer my congratulations and best wishes to the 7th University Student Senate.
As for continuing the highlights of the 6th University Student Senate, there is still much to cover. Along with the success of the tuition matters that I discussed a few weeks ago, I would like to highlight all the committees that were set up to increase student input across the board at the administrative and ultimately, decision level of the University. We set up five committees to increase our initiative of student input: The Student Development Committee, The Honors Program Student Council, The Student Ambassadors Program, The Student Maguire Campus Transition Team, and the Student Academic Council. Many of these committees stem from the Office of Academic Affairs. These were all set up to give students a chance to make recommendations to the USS, the administration, etc. The Student Ambassadors Program also gives our students a chance to attend Development and Alumni Relations functions.
Another big initiative and success that the 6th USS undertook was the implementation of the first ever Organizational Presidents' Association (OPA) Conference. This entailed 120 student organization executive board members to come together for a two-day session that included presentations by 30 staff, faculty, administrators and students on Time Management, a Recipe for Leadership, Women's Issues in Leadership, the Jesuit Mission and Leadership, among many others. The conference concluded with a banquet and dance at the Drexelbrook Country Club.
The final piece of work that the 6th USS implemented was a brief assessment of all areas of the USS as well as a glimpse into the State of the Student Body, The State of Development at SJU, and a "Where We Have Been, Where We Are Going" piece on the OPA and USS. This work is a 101 page, single spaced document that is available for pick up in the USS Office (Campion 227B).
As always, please do not hesitate to contact me at james.finore@sju.edu or 610-660-1075 if I can ever be of any assistance!
With Pride in SJU,
