In the first half, Jen Oyler struggled to make a three.

The sophomore guard hit her only three of the night six minutes into the home opener against Bucknell last Sunday.

Great form, good release, quality height but no dice for Oyler seven times.

Drenched in sweat and frustration, Oyler needed to find another way to hit the boards.

It wasn't until the second half when Oyler found her new niche.

Oyler, with her long arms and vocals, strongly defends the inside paint from unnecessary intruders.

Oyler totaled four defensive rebounds, the second highest of the night to senior center Zoya Pavlovskaya with seven.

With 12:29 remaining in the second half, Oyler totally whacked a layup by Bison forward Lauren Schober out of contention.

At 12:31, Oyler smiles for the first time since jump ball. If there is one aspect of the game that is off, turn another one on.

That is what the Hawks did to overcome Bucknell 63, 56.

The Hawks made 35 percent of their field goals and only 21.4 percent from three point range. Bucknell shot 45.5 percent from the field.

Yet, Saint Joseph's excelled on the charity stripe shooting 85.7 percent. Senior guard Whitney Ffrench made nine out of 13 from the foul line and sophomore guard Timisha Gomez went 4-4.

Offensive rebounds in the second half clinched the game for the Hawks. Pavlovskaya tallied a career- high of 13 rebounds, six being offensive.

Senior guard Ayahna Cornish tied with Pavlovskaya in offensive rebounds, claiming 18 second-chance points for Saint Joseph's.

"Our seniors stood out," said Head Coach Cindy Griffin. "Zoya works hard at practice, and she excelled in the game because of that. This was a big game for Ayahna as well. She played aggressive for her first game back. All the seniors were more vocal, more aggressive, and more determined."

Before the Hawks go against Hartford this Friday, Ffrench needs to remove a bloodstain from her home jersey. Well, maybe she should leave it

there for intimidation.

Hartford is the favorite to win the America East Championship for the third straight year. For the past two years, Hartford is the defending American East Champion.

Two players standout, junior forward Danielle Hood and sophomore forward Erica Beverly. Both are top rebounders: Beverly had ten rebounds against Dartmouth and Hood lead the Hartford Hawks in rebounding against Purdue.

Another player to watch from Connecticut is Jamie McCabe.

McCabe finished with a career high 14 points on a perfect 5-5 from the floor including a career best four three pointers.

In order to keep Hartford close to the mid 50s to low 60s, the Saint Joseph's Hawks need to extend defensive pressure beyond the arc. If Hartford is going to hit three's than the Hawks will need to be close to 50 percent in the paint or answer with their own three's.

Game time is Friday at 7 p.m at Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse.
