The Intramural Flag Football Championships took place on warm Wednesday evening on Finnesey Field.

Many students and parents were in attendance, but this year's championships had a special guest: Vince Papale.

Papale brought his 10-year-old son, Vinny. Vinny went to midfield to do the coin toss for the game.

The two teams were Dynasty and the Suite 20 Savages. The participants brought their best game, and became more competitive as the game went on.

Flag Football has quite a history at Saint Joseph's. Papale, a graduate from Saint Joseph's University, came back to Hawk Hill to watch the flag football championships.

Papale was a four-year member of the Saint Joseph's University Men's Track team who competed in the long jump, poll vault, triple jump, and high hurdles.

Papale was on the 1967-68 Middle Atlantic Championship team. The team was also undefeated in dual meets.

Invincible, starring Mark Wahlberg as Papale, features Papale's journey from being broke to becoming a walk-on for the Philadelphia Eagles.

"Mark is a really nice guy, and a great friend. If you liked him before you met him, you like him even more after you met him," said Papale.

Papale also told the Saint Joseph's University Track team that Mark Wahlberg had a Vespa scooter painted in Eagles colors with Eagles wings and the #83 during the filming of the movie Invincible.

The day after filming, Wahlberg sent it to Papale's home. Papale's children can't wait to ride it.

" I am just amazed at the success that the movie has had," said Papale. "It really took off."

Papale spoke at twenty-five cities across the country telling his story, and speaking for the Sallie Mae foundation. This foundation raises money for the Hold Fast to Dreams scholarships. Currently, this foundation raised $50,000 for students to continue their education.

Although Vince Papale was extremely successful in his athletic career, he attributes it to his foundations here at Saint Joseph's.
