This past weekend the Hawks' men's and women's cross country teams continued their seasons' home stretch when they flew to Lock Haven to compete in their respective Mid-Atlantic Regional Races.
The men's team put forth a solid effort. While Georgetown won the meet, SJU finished 12th in the 25-team race and was led by graduate student Mike DiDio's 13th place finish in a time of 30:46.5 for the 10k race. DiDio has led SJU in all four of his races this season.
"We were satisfied with our performance as a team because we placed right around where we were seeded," said DiDio. "We beat a few teams that we thought were going to be a challenge and everyone raced to their potential."
DiDio was referring to the teammates who backed him up with some positive results.
Senior co-captain Teddy Meyers was not too far behind DiDio, as he finished in 28th for the Crimson & Gray in a time of 31:23.2.
Fellow senior captain Shawn Duffy and freshman Jonathan Sclafani formed a mini-pack of their own, as they flapped their wings hard enough for 88th and 89th respectively with respective times of 32:52.2 and 32:54.7.
Other finishers for the Hawks included junior Rich Ryan, who finished in 33:27.9 for 114th place; sophomore Justin Heinze, who finished in 34:47.9 for 153rd; and sophomore Brendan Kearney, who completed the race in 35:22.1 for 161st.
At least six of those Hawks will have one more race this season when the IC4A Championships take place at Van Cortlandt Park in New York City. DiDio, Duffy, Heinze, Myers, Ryan, and Sclafani, are expected to compete in the most competitive meet of the season in one of the nation's most famous running courses.
While the team does not expect to accomplish as much in this race as some of the earlier ones in the season, the runners are hoping to finish the season on a high note.
"We are all hoping to finish the season strong," said DiDio. "We're really looking at this race from a more personal standpoint."
