On Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2006, University President Timothy R. Lannon, S.J., posted a message on MySJU regarding the recent security issues and hype happening in and around our community. I am urging all students to please read this message by logging onto MySJU. As students who attend a University that offers an exclusive city/suburban atmosphere, the information shared by Fr. Lannon is crucial to our ongoing protection. The safety and security of our students is indeed a top priority for the University, however it is imperative that all students cooperate with additional security measures that are being or will be established within our community. The University Student Senate would love to hear any suggestions, feedback or opinions if you are interested in sharing them, please contact the USS Security Chairpersons, Dan Harris at Daniel.harris@sju.edu or Lauren Peak at Lauren.peak@sju.edu or call 610-660-1076.
As the 6th USS is quickly coming to a close, I would like to start recapping the past year and what was accomplished. The first action that the 6th USS took part in was questioning tuition practices at the University. The USS originally asked for the Budget Advisory Committee (BAC) and the President's Cabinet to look into capping tuition for each class year, lowering the percentage with the start of each academic year. This exact method was problematic for various reasons, so there was a Tuition Discounting Subcommittee that was set up as part of the BAC. The BAC recommended adding additional funds of $500,000 to aid students who could no longer afford tuition at SJU as well as set up 20 additional scholarships valued at $2,000 each for freshmen, sophmores, juniors or seniors to apply. Students applying would need to demonstrate financial need, good academic and judicial standing, leadership experience, and letters of recommendation. These actions were passed by the Board of Trustees on October 13. Many committees and University members were involved with these procedures including the University Student Senate, the Budget Advisory Committee, Academic Affairs, Enrollment Management, the President's Office and the Board of Trustees. For now, this action is definitely a step in the right direction and will hopefully provide struggling students with some financial alleviation. I would like to thank all parties involved for making a commitment and taking a huge step towards something that will ultimately reap rewards for our student body.
In the next edition of The Hawk, I will continue wrapping up the accomplishments of the 6th University Student Senate. In the meantime, if I can be of any help, please do not hesitate to contact me at james.finore@sju.edu or 610-660-1075. Have a good weekend and a great Thanksgiving!
