To say that Saint Joseph's Men's Basketball picked up two of the best assistant coaches in Division I basketball would be an understatement.
Both Doug Overton and Dave Duda have done it all.
Overton, who you might know from his time with the Sixers, is an 11-year NBA veteran. He did stints with the Clippers, Sixers, Celtics, Nets, Nuggets, Magic, and Hornets.
While he is making his collegiate coaching debut with the Hawks, he is no new-comer to Philadelphia Big 5 College Basketball. Overton, a Philadelphia native, guided LaSalle to three straight NCAA tournament berths. He was enshrined in the Big 5 Basketball Hall of Fame in 1997.
David Duda, has accomplished nearly everything there is to accomplish at the Division II and III levels.
He comes to St. Joe's after spending time coaching at Philadelphia University, Widener University, and Delaware Valley College, amassing a record of 159-99 as a head coach. He guided Widener to the Sweet 16 of Division III this past season while earning several Coach of the Year honors.
Duda, who will be working with the post players this season, felt that he "had achieved everything there was to achieve" at the Division III level.
Duda also played under Head Coach Phil Martelli while at Bishop Kenrick High School and said that Martelli "is not much different than he was then," adding, "It's just on a bigger stage now. He is still the same guy."
Overton, meanwhile, felt that this job "was a great opportunity." He continued, "Coach Martelli is a great coach and this is a great program, and it's just a bonus that I got this opportunity in my hometown."
"Coach Martelli's pace and organization are different than I am used to, and when working with him I learn something new each day," Duda said.
Many people, however, including the other Atlantic 10 coaches who recently picked SJU to finish 8th in the conference, are counting out St. Joe's. Overton and Duda are urging otherwise.
