In an interview conducted by Anthony Calabro, Sue Moran, Assistant Coach for Women's Basketball, talks about her casting call for the movie, Immaculata.
How did this opportunity come about?
"An office co-worker came randomly into my office one day with a sheet saying, 'Hey, this may be something you might be interested in.' I thought it was interesting, but I really wasn't going to do it. And then someone else called and then all of a sudden three or four people were like, 'You should do this!' And I remember thinking, 'Okay, maybe it's meant to be.' And something came out about it in The Inquirer a couple of days before. I was like, 'All right, I'm going to grab a couple of friends and head on over there.'"
What part did you audition for?
"The original audition was an open tryout, it wasn't really for a part. We just went and took a couple of shots. The casting company then e-mailed me what they call sides for the part of 'Maureen.'"
Were you nervous at all?
"The first time I went to read, I was excited. The second time I went I knew it was getting down to the final cut and I started getting nervous. It's just not something I've ever done before. I don't know how to dress for these things. I was telling the director, if you ask me to shoot a foul shot to win a game in front of a thousand people, it's not a big deal, but this is weird."
How did you prepare?
"I did a lot by myself because I was embarrassed. And everyone was like 'Sue, if you're embarrassed, you're never going to be able to read in front of these people.' But it's different. The girls on the team were like, 'Come on, practice with us.' And I was like 'No!' because I know them. But a co-worker helped me out with the reading. I'm kind of a badass and I'm smoking in the dorm, and the nun comes in. So she [her co-worker] was the nun."
What did your players have to say?
"I think at the start they were surprised I was even trying out. I thought some of them could try out. But because of NCAA rules, they weren't allowed. I called them [casting directors] last week just to see if it was over. I don't know the protocol. Do you just not call back? And they said no, you'll definitely get a call but they're waiting on their star.
