If you were not an avid follower of the 2005-2006 Saint Joseph's Basketball team, odds are that you may have not heard of Edwin Lashley.
As a freshman last year, Lashley appeared in 18 games, averaging just 3.5 minutes per game. His best game of the season came against Saint Bonaventure, where he registered a career-high five points and two assists.
This season, however, Lashley is aiming to be a significant contributor to the team. He believes that now, as a sophomore, he understands the college game better than he did during his freshman year and is better prepared physically for the rigors of a college basketball season.
Lashley, who stands 6'4" and weighs 200 lbs., is a swing man for the Hawks, able to play both the shooting guard and small forward positions. As for the upcoming season, he is unsure of what is role will be, but his goal is to earn a spot in Coach Martelli's rotation and play as many minutes as possible.
Lashley said that, "It is the competitive spirit inside everyone to want to play as much as you can."
He believes that his biggest strength when he is on the court is his ability to shoot the basketball and stretch the defense, and his ball-handling is the aspect of the game he is working hardest to improve on. Throughout the off-season and during practice, Lashley has been working with the coaching staff to become the most complete player he can.
It is clear after talking to Lashley that he has great respect and admiration for the history of Saint Joseph's basketball and the Big 5.
"It is a great honor to play for Saint Joseph's and for the Big 5 in an area that has such a great college basketball tradition," he said.
Lashley also recognizes how great it is to play in front of such great home fans like the ones who pack Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse for each game and cheer with such passion.
First year assistant coach Doug Overton has won Lashley's respect with his knowledge of the game.
