The Saint Joseph's men's junior varsity basketball team will start their 12th season when they play against Penn this Tuesday at the Palestra.
Coach Bob "Barney" Hughes, a St. Joe's alum, heads the JV team.
When managing the team as a freshman, Hughes received the nickname "Barney" from men's varsity Head Coach Phil Martelli because he looked like Barney Rubble from the TV show, "The Flintstones." And he still has that nickname with his players today.
Those players fill up a 21-man roster whose captains are seniors Marc Winter and Brian Torres, and sophomore Raj Pineda.
"These guys are our captains because all of their excellent effort on both ends of the court," said Coach Hughes. "They also show strong leadership and make intelligent decisions with the basketball."
Supporting the Hawks' three captains are young, talented players who are looking to bring some spotlight to the team. These players include sophomore forward Mike "Lenny" Lenahan, freshman point guard Phil Conover, sophomore small forward Steve Sessa, and sophomore shooting guard Chris Kester.
The Hawks' opener against Penn is one of their highlighted games of the season. Penn heads up a list of rivals for whom the Hawks plan to increase their level of play. Besides playing Penn again on February 7, the Crimson & Gray will also face rivals Lafayette on Nov. 20, Eastern University on Jan. 22 and Feb. 12, and Lutheran College on Nov. 29 and Jan. 30.
"We just want to beat these guys," said Hughes. "Our games with these teams have always been competitive, and Lutheran is not only consistently good, but they normally have more talented players than us. But still, they're usually competitive games."
The JV team has been competing since the 1995-96 season, when Coach Martelli started it up.
