Bass points guard towards basket

Issue date: 11/10/06 Section: Sports
A former Hawk himself, Mark Bass, Assistant Coach of Men's Basketball, is known as one of the most prolific shooters in St. Joe's history.

He has taken his talent on the court and translated it into a mode of coaching.

Coach Bass works with the team, especially the guards, on shooting and their complete offensive game. Coming into this year, Bass has drawn the arduous task of developing a young group of shooters into disciplined offensive performers. With a team that lost four players last year's, three of which were guards, a difficult assignment lies in front of Bass.

Bass looks to define the games and improve the skills of this new crop of young talent.

"We are looking to improve each day in practice," says Bass, solidifying the ideal that practice depicts the actual game. Bass has been putting in time with all of the guards, honing their abilities and improving less polished aspects.

Coach Bass works with newcomers Garrett Williamson and Derrick Rivera on pure shooting, helps sophomore Edwin Lashley practice his court vision and point of view from the guard spot, and assists freshmen Jawan Carter and Darrin Govens in making better decisions on the court.

Bass played a significant role in developing the guards on the team and making them game ready, especially with Pat Calathes.

One of the most important duties Bass faces this year has to do with Calathes, a junior guard/forward .

The 6' 10" player has a great ability for the game, according to Bass. "We need to translate the end of last year into this year," he said.

When the season came to a close last year, Calathes was just peaking in his game play and his confidence, ending the season on a high note. Bass has been working with Calathes on keeping that consistency for the whole season, rather than seeing it in spurts.

Literally and figuratively, Calathes's height cannot be overlooked. "We're going to use his height to our advantage," said Bass.
