Letter: Dr. Terry
Issue date: 12/9/05 Section: Opinion
To The Editor:
A picture is worth a thousand words. Recall the power of the picture of Emmitt Till's mutilated body. Recall the power of images of dogs and fire hoses turned on children in the Jim Crow south. Recall the power that the image of the Confederate flag still carries to this day. We live in an image saturated society in which pictures convey perhaps more than words on a page. How we interpret images is just as important as the content of them. Imagine yourself pictured in service to a political agenda not once but twice without being allowed to express your own narrative view. How odd to find a distorted image of myself used as a tool in the current campus debate from which many people like myself have been excluded. We are responsible not only for our words but also for the manner in which we portray others but especially for how we portray those who are not like us.

Editor's Note: It was not the intention of The Hawk to degrade Dr. Terry in any way. Our photo was meant to reflect the events occuring on campus, and not to defame Dr. Terry or Dr. Davis.
